This Halloween Wood Rachet noise maker is marked, Made in Japan. It has a carved pumpkin design stamped on it. This popular toy is spun around to create noise. Rachet noise makers first appeared in the mid 1800s as a give away for Masquerade Parties. They are usually tin litho with bright colored holiday designs. They were commonly given to guests at Halloween, Mardi Gras and New Years. Some wooden models predate the tin litho type, but our listing is definitely from the 1940s, maybe made of wood, due to the metal shortage caused by WW2, or simply made of wood to meet a rapidly growing market demand. Please see our photos for condition, we feel this is RARE Halloween clapper is in wonderful condition and works fine.
