This Halloween toy is a wooden noise maker decorated with a Pumpkin and marked, Made in Japan. Halloween Clapper, noise makers began showing up in the middle of the 18th century. They were a popular party give away. Guests each had a noise maker to liven up parties, especially Masquerade Events for holidays such as Halloween and New Years, or Mardi Gras. From the very beginning they were made tin lithograph toys. These toys were made in several shapes and sizes...all with the purpose of making lots of noise. They are colorful and popular to collect. The wooden ones were a close cousin...and most likely less costly. They often came stamped or impressed with advertising or simple seasonal designs. They wooden Halloween ones are definitely harder to find. They were the result of WW2 and the lack of metal created by the war, which followed the Great Depression.
