This rare and hard to find plastic lenticular watch shows Olive Oyl and her boyfriend, Popeye the Sailor. Olive Oyl was a character created by Elzie Creisler Segar in 1919 for the comic strip, "Olive Oyl." Popeye the Sailor was also a character of his, first appearing in 1929 for the comic strip "Thimble Theater." Popeye was hired by Castor Oyl, Olive's father, and the fictional romance was born.
Popeye is famous for sucking spinach through his amazing and versatile pipe, plus trying to hold onto Olive Oyl's affection. Later, the comic strip became "Popeye." It was the most famous comic strip in 1930.
Popeye Premiums were found for spinach and candy cigarettes as mail-in premiums/prizes. The image of Popeye and Olive Oyl was a popular premium in advertising well into the 1960's, with a resurgence in the late 1980's. This plastic watch has a lenticular face changing between Popeye and Olive Oyl. The band is a red brick pattern. The watch does not have a working face and is decorational. This toy is in great condition with no scratches or marks, and is still wearable. This would be an interesting and rare addition to a premium collection, or to a Popeye collection.
The watch band measures 6.5 inches long. The face of the watch has a diameter of .75 inches.
