Back: Brooklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan, New York City Brooklyn Bridge spans the East RIver at the Lower end of Manhattan and connects New York with Brooklyn. In its day Brooklyn Bridge represented a world-famed engineering achievement. Construction began in 1870 and it was finally opened to traffic and pedestrians in 1883. The Span is suspended on four cables each 3578 feet long and each made up 5296 wires. The length of the river span is 1595 feet and the total length of the Bridge is 6537 feet with a width of 85 feet. The background shows the lower New York skyline as seen fro the Brooklyn side of the East River. Included in the buildings seen are, on the left, the City Bank, Farmers Trust, 60 Wall ST. Tower, with the Bank of Manhattan behind it and the Woolworth Building at the extreme right.
Mailed: Postmark in Aug of 1947 from New York, N. Y. with the three cent purple Thomas Jefferson stamp
